The successful candidate will report to the appropriate Pharmacy Service line manager or Clinical Specialist Pharmacist as assigned and who in turn reports to the Head of Pharmacy Services.

Salary:

Appointment will be made on the Senior Pharmacist scale (€75,527 - €87,584) at a point in line with Government pay policy.

Responsibilities

Key Responsibilities and Deliverables

 

  1. To ensure the needs of patients and professional staff are being adequately met by the Pharmaceutical service, including Clinical Pharmacy Services, provided.

 

  1. The provision of advice as required, to medical and nursing staff, on the proper and economic use of drugs and medicines including participating in schemes for the dissemination of information in relation to drugs and drug usage.

 

  1. To liaise and co-operate with other hospital departments, wards and staff with particular reference to medical and nursing staff caring for oncology patients on the maintenance and development of new methods of treatment.

 

  1. To facilitate the provision of an Aseptic Compounding service to patients receiving appropriate chemotherapeutic regimes and relevant ancillary treatments in line with evolving requirements of the hospital.

 

  1. To be responsible for the safe and effective operation of the Aseptic Compounding Unit (ACU) in order to ensure sterility and stability of the final product in line with current Irish, EU and International standards.

 

  1. To ensure all microbial physical monitoring regimens are maintained within the ACU.

 

  1. Be competent to facilitate audit and inspection of aseptic compounding and clinical trial activities, procedures and protocols with regard to statutory bodies.

 

  1. The supervision and supply of drugs, pharmaceuticals and other related items as may be required.

 

  1. To ensure that the purchase, storage and supply of all items is operated on the most economical lines, consistent with quality at Pharmacy, ward and departmental levels and with reference to legal requirements, transit, security and conditions of chemical and physical stability.

 

  1. The maintenance of records for purchasing, quality control, compounding and dispensing to the standards required.

 

  1. To manage the timely collation and input of all concerning drug usage in the hospital in line with departmental policy.

 

  1. Identify defects in supplies and equipment. Receive and record details concerning mishaps, investigate and report findings as required to the Pharmacy Manager.

 

  1. Lead changes in work, procedures, techniques or technologies having regard to developments in the field of Pharmaceutical care and clinical practice.

 

  1. To facilitate the identification, maintenance, updating and implementation of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) in line with changing practices locally, nationally and internationally.

 

  1. Lead and advise the process of developing protocols and guidelines designed to deliver optimal and economical patient care.

 

  1. Ensure best practice and compliance with agreed clinical guidelines.

 

  1. Ensure that the mediation use process is measured, analysed and optimised by undertaking regular clinical audit.

 

  1. Ensure that work schedules and programmes are created to provide for the most effective and efficient deployment of staff and other resources.

 

  1. Liaise closely and co-ordinate service delivery with the other team members to ensure a high level of teamwork between Pharmacists and Pharmaceutical Technicians.

 

  1. Motivate team members, through the use of agreed goals and objectives.

 

  1. To provide cover to the Dispensary and Clinical services as instructed from time to time by the Pharmacy Manager.

 

  1. To keep abreast of knowledge of new technologies including automation.

 

 

  1. To supervise and manage any Pharmacists and other staff assigned.

 

  1. To participate in the teaching and training (including in-service training), continuing education and research activities consistent with the goals of the Pharmacy Department.

 

  1. The performance of all duties and responsibilities in line with all Pharmacy Department procedures and protocols as well as hospital wide procedures.

 

  1. Ensure that all departmental and hospital wide Health and Safety protocols and procedures are adhered to and all areas of non-compliance are promptly addressed.

 

  1. Ensure that departmental and organisational policies are enforced including but not limited to;
    • Work within Health & Safety Hospital Policies on all matters related to Health & Safety within the Hospital and comply with the regulations set down to ensure safety to patients, visitors and colleagues.
    • Record all accidents and untoward occurrences according to Hospital policy.
    • Attend fire lectures and fire drills in accordance with the law and to be fully aware of the position of fire alarms, emergency equipment and exits.
    • Ensure compliance to standards in respect of all legislative requirements, including Manual Handling, Security, Infection Control and Standard Precautions.
    • Adopt the correct administrative procedures when dealing with complaints from patients/relatives following set policies and procedures.
    • Infection prevention and control is an essential aspect of patient care. All post holders must attend mandatory training in infection prevention and control and be compliant with all measures required by the Hospital. 
    • Post holders must be familiar with the Hospital’s Infection Control Policies, including those that apply to their duties, such as the Hand Hygiene Policy, the Uniform Policy (where one exists) and Personal Protective Clothing Policy. Post holders who have clinical responsibilities must incorporate into their clinical activities up-to-date evidence that supports safe infection control practices and procedures, for example the use of aseptic techniques and the safe disposal of sharps
    • In the course of normal work the post holder will come into possession of confidential information concerning patients and staff. This information should be treated confidentially and in accordance with the Data Protection Act and European Union regulations.
    • The post holder is responsible for ensuring that he/she maintains the integrity and quality of both computerised and manual data

 

  1. Performance of such other duties appropriate to the post, including on call, weekend opening and other such services that may from time to time be introduced by the Head of Pharmacy Services.

 

  1. To perform such other duties appropriate to the office as may from time to time be assigned by the Chief Executive or designated Officer.

Qualifications

Mandatory:

 

1. Professional Qualifications, Experience etc

 

(a)     Candidates must,

(i)      Be a registered Pharmacist with the Pharmaceutical Society of Ireland (PSI) or be entitled to be so registered

And

(ii)     Have at least three years satisfactory post registration hospital experience

And
(iii)    Possess the requisite knowledge and ability (including a high standard of suitability and management ability) for the proper discharge of the duties of the office.
