Position Summary

 

In Beaumont Hospital, the Director of Nursing manages and is accountable for the total nursing services at executive level. The Directorate Nurse Manager is accountable to the Director of Nursing for the work of Ward/Departmental clinical nurse managers assigned to his/her division. The Ward/Departmental clinical nurse managers are in turn accountable to the Directorate Nurse Manager for the performance of clinical nurse manager 1, staff nurses, student nurses and ancillary staff working with nurses on wards or in departments.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities


Clinical Course Co-Ordinator / Education Facilitator in the Theatre Department The post holder will be responsible for:
• Co-ordinate the post graduate course and specialist practice course in Theatre nursing with the Course Co- ordinator in the Centre of Education, Clinical Nurse Managers and Directorate Nurse Manager e.g. co-ordinating time tables with speakers and other clinical course co-ordinators.
• Support and work with all course students in the clinical environment thus enabling them to integrate theory to practice e.g. ensure theory studied in the RSCI is reflected in clinical practice e.g. models of nursing used in care plans.
• Ensure research methods studied in RCSI are linked to practice.
• Update and implement local policies and guidelines.
• Work in partnership with the Theatre clinical practice support nurse to ensure a quality peri operative service for the patient, through standard setting and Audit.
• Co-ordinate the induction programme for all staff.

 

PREPARATORY WORK

• Plan clinical placements for the duration of the course.
• Organise the rotation of course nurses between the Theatres and confirm in writing these dates and names of course nurses on rotation.
• Use the library facilities to prepare tutorials, ensure up to date journals are available on current Peri operative nursing issues. Introduce course nurse to these facilities and guide them to the appropriate sections of the library and to search the literature in relation to Theatre nursing.
• Ensure ongoing curriculum development.
• Prepare examinations to reflect the clinical module objectives.
• Liaise with the Theatre CNM3 with regard to clinical assessment and competence.
• Participate in the selection and recruitment of course nurses.
• Prepare regular in-service updates for nursing staff in consultation with the Theatre clinical nurse managers

 

LECTURES / TUTORIALS

• Plan timetables in conjunction with Course Tutor and other clinical course co-ordinators
• Draw up a list of lectures/tutorials and decide on dates, for curriculum and in-service programmes
• Write to lecturer and confirm date, time and venue. Following lecture send letter of appreciation.
• Request appropriate speakers to give tutorials/lectures and discuss with them the nurse’s prior level of experience and knowledge of the subject and decide with speaker the content of the lecture.
• Provide tutorials on study days as required.
• Provide tutorials in the clinical area in addition to the classroom.
• Ensure all lectures/tutorials comply with course curriculum.

 

CLINICAL PRACTICE

• Work with each course nurse in the clinical areas as defined by the Course Outline Curriculum.
• Encourage the learner to apply theory to practice when carrying out patient care.
• Allocate each course nurse to ensure they gain experience in each area of the patients Peri operative Journey.
• Arrange for suitable clinical supervision from other members of the Theatre Department nursing staff when necessary for all course nurses and nurses on rotation from other courses.
• Motivate and enthuse learners to have a commitment and an interest to seek out new nursing experiences.
• Assist course nurses with their projects.
• Actively Support and encourage the nurses’ career pathway within Theatre through promoting the Theatre course benefits.
• Encourage/optimise all opportunity for multidisciplinary team in teaching within the Theatre setting.

 

EVALUATION

• Correct all examinations, assignments and tests in conjunction with RCSI guidelines and confirm in writing all marks.
• Counsel course nurses with regard to performance and manage under performance as per Beaumont Hospital Policy.
• Review and evaluate assignments and tests with the course nurse.
• Formally assess each nurse in the clinical l setting covering management of patients, teaching and communication.
• Discuss all progress of course nurses with Course Co-ordinator and CNM3.
• Document evaluation of the duration of the course with the RCSI Co-ordinator and student representative.
• Evaluate and document in-service programmes.
• Meet with Course Co-ordinator in Centre of Education, Clinical Nurse Managers and Divisional Nurse Manager frequently to discuss the evaluation of the course and other in-service programmes.
• Ensure clinical portfolio is a maintained and in service programme documented.

 

PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT

The post holder is expected to:
• Maintain and update knowledge and keep abreast of all relevant professional development and current trends in Peri operative nursing.
• Maintaining and updating personal skills in clinical nursing by “hands on” nursing commitment.
• Discuss present performance and future needs with the Directorate Nurse Manager.
• Attend performance/appraisal review with CNM3 / Directorate Nurse Manager at least once a year.

 

 

The job description represents the main functions of the role and is subject to review and amendment to reflect the needs of the service.

Qualifications

Selection Criteria:
Selection criteria outline the qualifications, skills, knowledge and/or experience that the successful candidate would need to demonstrate for successful discharge of the responsibilities of the post.

Mandatory:

1. Statutory Registration, Professional Qualifications, Experience, etc
(a) Eligible applicants will be those who on the closing date for the competition:
(i) Are registered in the relevant division of the Register of Nurses & Midwives
maintained by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland [NMBI] (Bord
Altranais agus Cnáimhseachais na hÉireann) or entitled to be so registered.

(ii) Have at least 5 years post registration experience (or an aggregrate of 5 years
fulltime post registration experience) of which 2 years must be in the speciality
or related area.

(iii) Have the clinical, managerial and administrative capacity to properly discharge
the functions of the role.

(iv) Candidates must demonstrate evidence of continuous professional development.

(b) Candidates must possess the requisite knowledge and ability including a high standard of
suitability and clinical, managerial and administrative capacity to properly discharge the
functions of the role.


2. Annual registration
(i) On appointment, practitioners must maintain live annual registration on the relevant
division of the Register of Nurses and Midwives maintained by the Nursing and
Midwifery Board of Ireland (Bord Altranais agus Cnáimhseachais na hÉireann).

(ii) Confirm annual registration with NMBI to the HSE by way of the annual Patient
Safety Assurance Certificate (PSAC).

3. Health
Candidates for and any person holding the office must be fully competent and capable of
undertaking the duties attached to the office and be in a state of health such as would indicate a
reasonable prospect of ability to render regular and efficient service.


4. Character
Candidates for and any person holding the office must be of good character.

 

Desirable

• A management course is desirable.

 

 

 

If an appointee has previously been employed in the Civil or Public Service and that appointee is entitled to or in receipt of a pension from the Civil or Public Service or where a Civil/ Public Service pension comes into payment during the appointee’s re-employment that pension will be subject to abatement in accordance with Section 52 of the Public Service Pensions (Single Scheme and other Provisions) Act 2012.
