Salary:

Appointment will be made on the Medical Scientist scale (€43,892 - €71,552, LSI1 €72,938 per annum) at a point in line with Government pay policy.

Hours of work: 

35 hours per week

Responsibilities

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

General Responsibilities

  1. To contribute to the provision of a high quality patient focused service.
  2. To perform such technical duties as directed by the Laboratory Manager, Chief Medical Scientist or their deputy/ies.
  3. To assist in training Medical Laboratory Assistants, support staff and visiting workers as required.
  4. To contribute to maintaining department accreditation with INAB through compliance with ISO15189.
  5. To assist in the training of new and existing staff.
  6. To assist in implementing measures for Safety, Health and Welfare to all staff.
  7. To assist in providing statistical and management information when requested.
  8. To attend courses and meetings as appropriate to maintain up-to-date knowledge.
  9. To fulfil CPD requirements.
  10. Any other duties as appropriate to the grade and qualifications.
  11. To actively participate in external and internal quality assurances schemes.
  12. To participate in the Directorate Joint Review Process

 

Specific Duties - Medical Scientists

  • To report to the Laboratory Manager and Chief Medical Scientist in the Chemical Pathology Department. However the chosen candidate may be required to report on a day to day basis to the designated Senior Medical Scientist.
  • To cooperate with and support all project work undertaken in the Laboratory Directorate, to include, inter alia, the Laboratory Modernisation (LabMod) and MedLIS projects.
  • To observe the strictest confidence when dealing with all aspects of patient or Hospital information.
  • To perform technical procedures to the highest professional standard as determined by the Consultant Chemical Pathologist /Chief Medical Scientist.
  • To participate in training staff and students as required.
  • To actively participate in and promote continuing education and research activities consistent with the post.
  • To co-operate in evaluating equipment, consumables and research projects.
  • To participate in ensuring that effective safety procedures are in place to comply with the Health and Safety at Work Act and to assist and co-operate with the Laboratory Management team in developing procedures to be followed in preventing and managing accidents occurring in the work area.
  • To perform such other duties appropriate to the office as may be assigned to him/her by an officer designated by the Board in consultation with the Consultant Chemical Pathologist/Chief Medical Scientist.

 

General

  • Validation of new methods, controls, preparation of reagents and controls as required. Preparing reports on aspects of the service. Assisting in answering phone queries from our client centres. Routine maintenance of instrumentation.
  • Preparation for participation in the on-call service (for new fully qualified staff)

Selection Criteria:

Qualifications

Mandatory:

  1. Statutory Registration, Professional Qualifications, Experience, etc

(a) Candidates for appointment must:

(i) Be registered, or be eligible for registration, on the Medical Scientists Register maintained by the Medical Scientists Registration Board at CORU.

AND

(ii) Have the requisite knowledge and ability (including a high standard of suitability and professional ability) for the proper discharge of the duties of the office.

AND

(iii) Provide proof of Statutory Registration on the Medical Scientists Register maintained by the Medical Scientists Registration Board at CORU before a contract of employment can be issued.

 

  1. Annual registration

(i) On appointment practitioners must maintain annual registration on the Medical Scientists Register maintained by the Medical Scientists Registration Board at CORU.

AND

(ii) Practitioners must confirm annual registration with CORU to the HSE by way of the annual Patient Safety Assurance Certificate (PSAC).

 

 

Desirable:

 

  • Knowledge and experience in Biochemistry.
