Full-Time, 35 hours per week

Job Summary:

The position requires a strategic approach to the development of services and structures, embracing continuous quality improvement and technological development and the management of changes necessary to achieve organisational objectives.

Responsibilities

Principal Duties & Responsibilities:

  1. The role will support the Irish National Creutzfeldt Jacob Disease Surveillance Unit (INCJDSU) service while further developing the scope of clinical testing within both the Neuropathology and Histopathology Departments.
  2. At present the hours of attendance are between 8.00am to 8.00pm with a luncheon interval of one hour.
  3. Report to the Chief Medical Scientist in the Histology Department.
  4. To perform clinical laboratory work to the highest professional standards as determined by the Consultant in Charge/Chief Medical Scientist.
  5. Participate in training staff as required.
  6. Ensure, in co-operation with the Consultant in Charge/Chief Medical Scientist / designated senior staff, appropriate compliance with International and National Guidelines and standards for the provision of a Histology Laboratory service and actively participate in internal and external quality control.
  7. Actively participate in and promote continuing education and research activities consistent with the position.
  8. To actively participate in the Department's continued commitment to accreditation to ISO15189.
  9. Co-operate in evaluating equipment, consumables and research projects.
  10. Observe the strictest confidence when dealing with all aspects of patient or hospital information.
  11. The chosen candidate will participate in ensuring that effective safety procedures are in place to comply with the Health and Safety at Work Act.
  12. Assist and co-operate with the Laboratory Management Team in developing procedures to be followed in preventing and managing accidents occurring in the work area.
  13. To perform such other duties appropriate to the office as may be assigned to him/her by an officer designated by the Board in consultation with the Consultant in Charge/Chief Medical Scientist / Laboratory Manager. As per MF-GEN-0098 contained in staff members training folder.

Qualifications

Selection Criteria: 

Selection criteria outline the qualifications, skills, knowledge and/or experience that the successful candidate would need to demonstrate for successful discharge of the responsibilities of the post.

Mandatory:

1          PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE, ETC.

(a)     Candidates for appointment must possess:

(i)      Bachelor of Science (Honours) in a degree applicable to the position which includes Anatomy and Physiology or that which is deemed relevant to the position

And

(ii)     Possess an NFQ Level 9 post graduate qualification or equivalent qualification at minimum Level 9 which is deemed relevant to the position

And

(iii)    Possess four years full time experience (or an aggregate of four years’ experience) in a Laboratory since qualifying as a scientist.

And

(iv)    Demonstrate evidence of Continuous Professional Development.

And

(v)     Candidates must have the requisite knowledge and ability (including a high standard of suitability and management ability) for the proper discharge of the duties of the office.

 

(b)     In addition, experience working with some/all of the following would be favourable:

(i)      Prion Diseases

(ii)     Category 3 Biosafety Regulations

(iii)    Neurodegenerative Disorders

(iv)    Histopathology Techniques

(v)     ISO15189 Accreditation
