Hours of work: 37.5 Hours per Week

Position Summary:

The Student Allocations Liaison Officer (SALO) The role of the Student Allocations Officer is varied. One of the defining features of the post is the need for flexibility in the approach taken to the job and the management of complex changes, from time to time, to the BSc Degree Programme for pre-registration Nurse Education. The need to pre-empt difficulties and report relevant issues to all parties involved is a major role of the Student Allocations Officer.

The SALO has the responsibility to liaise with the appropriate staff within Beaumont and within the third level institutions i.e. Dublin City University in relation to the allocation of Student Nurses to clinical placements.

He/ she is responsible for the allocation of clinical placement for all pre-registration Student Nurses ensuring each students meets the requirements and standards of the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland.

  • Will liaise closely with the Allocations Officer in the linked Higher Education Institute (Dublin City University) and other Higher Education Institutes as required.
  • Will attend relevant partnership meetings with Dublin City University as appropriate e.g. CLEG, Allocation and other meetings.
  • Will work as part of the Nursing Practice Development team other activities that support or enhance the clinical learning environment
  • Will create and promote healthy working relationships between Clinical Staff, the Nurse Practice Development team, University Staff and the nursing students

 

Responsibilities


Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

The purpose of the Student Allocations Liaison Officer (SALO) role is to work closely with the CPC / CNM’S and the Centre of Education /Nursing Practice Development Department, areas where the nursing students attend for practice placements in Beaumont Hospital, the School of Nursing DCU and other linked hospitals in planning and co-ordinating practice placements for nursing students. The SALO has a pivotal role in planning and coordinating clinical placements for BSc nursing students in DCU.

 

MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

 

1. Have in-depth knowledge of the Nursing Degree programme and of the clinical experiences required to meet the needs of the Nursing Degree Programme.

2. Co-ordinate nursing student clinical placements within Beaumont Hospital in accordance with NMBI and Standards for Nurse Registration Education Programmes and University Guidelines.

3. Liaise with the Clinical Placement Coordinators, Clinical Nurse Managers and other relevant parties involved in the educational process in clinical practice placement sites, and with the Allocation Officer , and Module Co-ordinators in DCU

4. Co-ordinate clinical placements for external nursing students on placement in Beaumont Hospital

5. Create and promote healthy working relationships between Clinical Staff, the Nurse Practice Development team, University Staff and the nursing students.

6. Liaise with Higher Education Institutes on all matters pertaining to the undergraduate programme.

7. Keep accurate and complete records on nursing student clinical allocations.

8. Ensure, in conjunction with the NPDC and CPCs, that the selection of areas for clinical practice placement supports the achievement of the learning outcomes of the educational programmes.

9. Communicate key messages to nursing students attending clinical placement in relation to matters affecting clinical practice placement.

10. Liaise with various Departments to ensure that students are adequately prepared for clinical practice placements at Beaumont Hospital in terms of Garda clearance, occupational health screening, uniforms and name badges

11. Attend meetings and participate in formalised working groups /committees at hospital level and between DCU other linked hospitals and the School of Nursing and Midwifery, DCU in relation to facilitating practice placements for students and the ongoing development and evaluation of the undergraduate programme.

12. Devise and develop an Allocations Programme in partnership with all relevant stakeholders, which meet the requirements of NMBI.

13. Source and work with CPC’s in developing new placements as required.


Human Resources


14. Salo to liase with Administration staff in Centre of Education to ensure students are set up on HR system STORM. Admin staff in Centre of Education to obtain employee and post numbers from HR to facilitate this process.

15. Salo to liase with Salaries department re up to date Pay as per latest HSE Circular on Student Pay.

16. SALO to liase with Finance Department re travel allowance for supernumerary nursing students

17. SALO to liase with HR recruitment RE: Managing Garda Clearance,

18. SALO to liase with Occupational Health re schedules of vaccinations for first year students and other administrative requirements to enable student placement.
19. Input and maintain nursing students’ time sheets and liase with DCU. ..

20. Maintain accurate records of nursing students’ attendance, planned/unplanned absence and produce reports on same as required.

21. Provide statistical or other information in relation to the nursing students programme to the DON/ RCSI Group DON, DCU and HSE.

22. Update student personnel files


Nurse Practice Development


23. Lead in the coordination of the annual hospital graduation.

24. Participate in monitoring and auditing the Clinical Learning Environment Audit for Nursing Students in conjunction with the Clinical Placement Co-ordinators / Nurse Practice Development Coordinator.

25. Participate in student placement evaluations and other related undergraduate programme evaluations through the collection and collation of data and report writing.

26. Participate in nurse practice development activities as designated by the NPDC in order to promote best practice within the nursing service and organisation.

27. Participate in nursing audit, research and development initiatives as assigned by the NPDC.

28. Develop and revise policies, procedures, protocols and guidelines and documentation as relevant to the post.

29. Perform duties as assigned from time to time by the Nursing Practice Development Co-ordinator/Director of Nursing.


Professional Development


3.1 Keep abreast of current trends and developments in professional nursing matters and relevant specialist clinical knowledge.
3.2 Participate in continuous professional development.
3.3 Engage in personal development planning with the Nurse Practice Development Coordinator on an annual basis or more often if required.

 

Information Technology
4.1.1 Ensure that the team makes the most effective and efficient use of developments in information technology for both patient care and administrative support in a manner, which integrates well with systems throughout the organisation.
4.2 Collect, interpret and present data and information on the Department’s activities, staffing and expenditure, as required.
4.3 Support registered nurses and students in the use of the hospital policy, procedures, protocols and guidelines repository Q Pulse system.

Qualifications

Selection Criteria:

Mandatory:

Each candidate must:
• Be a member of the live register of the Nursing Midwifery Board of Ireland.
• Possess a qualification in Nursing at NQAI level 8 or above.
• 5 years post-registration experience in a general hospital setting within the last 7 years
• Possess excellent communication skills

 

Desirable:

A. Have completed a recognised Management/Leadership programme.
B. Demonstrate ability to manage deadlines and handle multiple tasks
C. Excellent knowledge of Microsoft Suite of programmes.
D. Evidence of ability to present and manage information in a clear and concise manner.
