Full-Time 37.5 hours per week.

Responsibilities

 

Position Summary:

 

The Nephrology Unit at Beaumont Hospital is the largest referral centre in Ireland for the specialities of Nephrology and Dialysis and the National Kidney Transplant Service (NKTS) is coordinated through Beaumont Hospital. The post holder is expected to deliver high quality nursing care within Peters ward which is a 26 bedded acute nephrology ward delivering care to patients with a wide variety of renal diseases with various stages of chronic kidney disease and specialising in acute/chronic nephrology conditions and renal replacement modalities (acute/chronic dialysis and home therapies). The post holder will act as an advocate for the patient and a resource for colleagues within and outside the TUN Directorate. They will provide educational support within the interdisciplinary team, and assist in the development of quality initiative projects related to the service.

 

The post will demand excellent communication skills and professional relationships within Peters Ward, the multidisciplinary team and all areas of the Nephrology Unit and associated clinical and administrative areas within Beaumont Hospital.

 

 

 

The post holder will assist Clinical Nurse Manager I and II with regard to:-

 

CLINICAL ROLE:

 

To provide and maintain effective, individualised nursing care by:-

 

1.                   Assessing (with the patients where possible) physical, psychological and social problems and the need for nursing intervention.

 

2.                   Preparing and up-dating the nurse care plans within a nursing framework to include treatment delegated by medical staff.

 

3.                   Assisting the medical staff in their treatment of patients through the co-ordination of care and treatments provided by other disciplines and integrating these into the care plan.

 

4.                   Acting as team leader in giving skilled nursing care and treatments for a caseload of patients.

 

5.                   Planning the involvement of the patient’s relatives, teaching and supervising nursing techniques in preparation for the transfer home.

 

6.                   Maintaining a high standard of professional and ethical responsibility.

 

7.                   Carrying out nursing and clinical practice in accordance with Department of Nursing and Hospital policies, procedures and clinical guidelines.

 

8.                   Provision of a high quality evidence based nursing service in a multi-disciplinary environment and to promote the highest attainable standard of safe and effective patient care.

 

9.                   Development of clinical expertise, team leadership and teaching skills through nursing practice.

 

10.                Management of nursing care under the direction of the Clinical Nurse Manager/Nurse in charge.

 

11.                Maintain effective communication and professional relationships with all members of the multi-disciplinary team to ensure that a cohesive effective service is provided.

 

12.                Participate in the development, implementation and evaluation of clinical practice in accordance with Hospital and Unit nursing policies and clinical guidelines and contribute to their on-going development.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

 

CLINICAL ROLE:

 

13.                To promote and maintain a safe environment for patients and staff. 

 

14.                Works within their scope of practice at all times, as outlined by the NMBI.

 

15.                Maintain supervision of students and junior staff, providing direction and supports as necessary.

 

16.                Recommend/identify changes that will enhance patient safety and ensure the deliverance of high standard and quality patient care.

 

17.                Maintain effective communication and professional relationships within Peters Renal Ward and with all areas of the Nephrology Unit, and all associated clinical and administrative areas within Beaumont Hospital.

 

18.                Contributes to nursing quality assurance by being aware of and assisting in clinical audits and in data collection.

 

19.                Ensure patient/professional confidentiality and data protection in line with General Data Protections regulations (GDPR).

 

20.                Communicate with patients, family and /or carer as appropriate, to assess patient’s needs and provide relevant support, information, education, advice and counselling as required.

 

21.                Adapt effectively and efficiently in an ever-changing work environment. 

 

22.                Maintain accurate clinical records complying with current legislation and best practice

 

23                 Provides an efficient, effective and high quality service, respecting the needs of each patient, family and/or carer.

24.                Effectively manages time and caseload in order to meet changing and developing service needs.

 

25.                Continually monitors the service to ensure it reflects current needs.

 

26.                Implement and manage identified changes.

 

27.                Ensures that confidentiality in relation to patient records is maintained.

 

28.                Maintains accurate records and data on all matters pertaining to the planning, management, delivery and evaluation of care.

 

 

COMMUNICATION SKILLS:

 

1.                   Communicates with all patients and members of the multidisciplinary team in an appropriate and professional manner at all times.

 

2.                    Promotes dignity and respect in the workplace amongst colleagues.

 

 

PROFESSIONAL:

 

1.                   Supports the philosophy, objectives and goals of the nursing department and hospital.

 

2.                   Follows appropriate lines of authority by discussing issues firstly with Clinical Nurse Manager, then with Unit Nurse Manager and then with the Director of Nursing.

 

3.                   Demonstrates flexibility by assisting in other areas of the Hospital as needed.

 

 

EDUCATION:

 

1.       Provide education to patients and their families/significant others on their illness and treatment options based on up to date evidence based best practice. Ensure the availability of appropriate information/educational resources.

2.       Maintain and update knowledge of relevant professional development and all current trends in the speciality of nephrology nursing, and an awareness of future trends.

3.       Provide mentorship and preceptor ship for nursing colleagues as appropriate.

 

·         Be responsible for addressing own continuing professional development needs.

Qualifications

Mandatory:

 

·         Applicants must be registered on the General Register of Nurses maintained by The Nursing & Midwifery Board, Ireland and have name maintained on Live Register.

Desirable:

 

·         A Post Graduate Diploma in Nephrology nursing.
